The Dangers of BPA

Bisphenol A (BPA)/Bisphenol S (BPS) are industrial chemicals that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960’s. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. These polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food, beverages, and ie. plastic water bottles. The BPA chemicals leach their toxins into the foods stored in them. Some dental sealants and composites may also contain BPA. BPS is alternative chemical used in the place of BPA, but may be just as dangerous to the human body. These chemicals do not leave the body easily…it does it’s damage first.
BPA/BPS are an endocrine disrupters which means that they mimic or interfere with your body’s hormones and disrupts your endocrine system. The glands of your endocrine system and hormones that they release are instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism as well as sexual function and reproductive processes. BPA can behave a similar way to estrogen and other hormones of the human body. High doses of BPA can cause infertility and other health issues. Everyday use of BPA, damages brain cells, affects mood and memory, learning abilities as well as depression. It is important that Alzheimer’s patients and persons who have  ADHD should not be drinking their water or eating any foods from plastic containers or cans that are not BPA free due to the excess chemical toxicity in these containers, use glass or food grade stainless steel. This chemical is especially damaging the growing bodies of young children. BPA baby bottles were banned in 2012, and the manufactures are now using Bisphenol S (BPS) and other chemicals. Recent studies are showing that this new approach is just as bad if not worse than the original. 80% of Americans have detectable levels of BPS in their urine.
The FDA continues to support the use of BPA in current food packaging because they claim the amount that leaches into the food and beverages is small. The thing is…a poison is still a poison no matter what the amount. BPA can be detected in the urine of 93% of Americans. The typical Standard American Diet includes canned  and packaged goods, frozen plastic containers ready to microwave, BPA plastic water and beverage bottles. NEVER microwave in ANY plastic container! Even when not heated baby bottles and plastic bottles leach their chemicals into the water we drink.  The highest concentration of BPA is found in canned soups, pasta, tomato products and infant formulas.
It’s almost impossible to avoid BPA contact because in addition to being in most packaged food items it is an environmental contaminant. It is even in the cash register reciepts.  Even when buying and using glass jars and bottles the hiding spots are the lids of glass jars; baby foods, jelly, pickles, salsa and other condiments. Other places are aerosol cans for whipping cream and non-stick sprays, bottles and tins of cooking oil, aluminum beverage cans, metal coffee cans, and beer kegs. BPA at levels found in the American diet have triggered symptoms of IBS, commonly seen in ulcerative colitis and possibly Crohn’s disease symptoms. Studies have also found that BPA lowers Vitamin D levels in the bloodstream…also disrupting normal reproductive and thyroid function. 
Plastics of Polystyrene (#6) known as Styrofoam to make cups, plates, bowls, and takeout containers, meat trays etc. Polystyrene is known to leach styrene into your food, which can damage your nervous system and is linked to cancer. Temperature has been found to play a role in how much styrene leaches from polystyrene containers, which means using them for hot foods and beverages (coffee) may be the worst of all. 

Symptoms, warning signs of BPA toxicity:

*You are overweight…Historically, the concept of obesity was one of “calories in, calories out”. It is now due to the high intake of chemicals within the body from the foods we eat and the containers they come in.
*Early puberty. BPA disrupts our hormones.
*Erectile dysfunction
*Your blood pressure is too high.
*You have ADHD.
*You have heart disease.
*You have prostate cancer.
*IBS symptoms/leaky gut.

The numbers on the plastic containers and what they mean:
1.  PET or PETE (Polyethylene terephthalate)
2.  HDPE (High-density polyethylene)
3.  PVC (Polyvinyl chloride)
4.  LDPE (lLo-denisity polyethylene)
5.  PP (Polypropylene)
6.  PS (Polystyrene) Styrofoam
7.  PLA (polycarbonate plastic) the worst one.
  
The ones that may be used, somewhat safe: 1,2,4 and 5. Not to be used at all: 3,6,and 7. We need to avoid all chemicals from our diets, they are worse than the plagues for we being Poisoned To Death.

Stuffed Acorn Squash

Stuffed Acorn Squash

Servings: 2
Prep Time: 10-20 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:
1 Acorn squash, washed, cut in half length-wise
clean out the membranes and seeds
1/2 cup carrots, chopped
1/2 cup broccoli, chopped
1/4 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup onion, chopped
1/4 cup quinoa and 1 cup filtered water
1 Vine ripe tomato, chopped
1 Tbls organic unsalted butter
1 tsp lemon juice, fresh squeezed
2 Tbls filtered water
1/2 tsp Sea salt
pepper, to taste
1/2 tsp ground sage
1/2 tsp marjoram

Prep Ahead:
1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
2. Line an baking sheet with parchment paper. Place
cut and cleaned squash cut side down, and bake
45 minutes or until squash is nearly tender.
3. Prepare and cook the quinoa. Put in a saucepan,
1/4 cup of quinoa and 1 cup of filtered water, allow
to boil and turn to simmer covered for 20 minutes.
4. Assemble all the spices and veggie ingredients,
chop up all the veggies. Set aside.
5. Squeeze the lemon juice and set aside.

Making It:
1. Meanwhile, in a large skillet sauté the chopped
vegetables in the butter for 4-5 minutes. Add
the filtered water to the veggies as well as the
spices, salt and pepper. Stir frequently until veggies
are tender. Add tomatoes, cooked quinoa, and lemon
juice.
2. Spoon the quinoa mixture into the inverted squash
halves. Bake 10-15minutes or until squash is tender.

This recipe may be doubled or tripled to feed a larger
group of people.

Broccoli Garden Vegetable Salad

Broccoli Garden Vegetable Salad

Servings:  4
Serving Size: 2 cups
Prep Time:  10 minutes

Ingredients:
2 cups broccoli, cut into bite size pieces
2 cups cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 avocado, peeled and diced
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped fine
4 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbs. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp. Redmond Sea Salt

Prep And Assemble:
Cut up all the vegetables and place in bowl, set aside.
Chop the basil leaves and place onto the vegetables.
Pour the olive oil, lemon juice and salt on top the vegetables
and mix thoroughly until well coated.

Serve with unleavened bread, corn bread or organic pita bread.

No-Oil Avocado Salad Dressing

Servings:    3 cups
Serving Size:   varies
Prep Time:   10 minutes

Ingredients:
2 avocadoes, peeled and pitted
1  1/2 cups  distilled /filtered water
1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
6-8 fresh basil leaves
1 tsp. Redmond Sea Salt
1 tsp. paprika

Making It:
Put all ingredients into blender and blend until smooth may add additional/less water as needed for desired pouring consistency.
A good and tasty way of cutting out the excess fats from
our diet.

Nitrites/Nitrates

Dear Readers,

Nitrites are additives and preservatives added to foods to preserve the color of the foods, also helping to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria especially found in meats. Nitrites are composed of nitrogen and oxygen which are an important part of our environment and our body.

Exposure happens when substances enter the body, nitrites and nitrates oxidize the iron atoms in the hemoglobin from ferros iron to ferric iron which renders the hemoglobin unable to carry oxygen through the blood and the body suffers from this lack of oxygen. It damages these red blood cells, but also morphs into the molecules of the body that causes cancer. Complications due to nitrites can include seizures or even death.

I am going to give my opinion just an hypothesis (not a proven scientific fact as of yet). If the person develops  anemia, and the effects of anemia are decreased hemoglobin cells, which carries oxygen to the cells of the body. There is also a decrease in the red blood production or red cell destruction, or blood loss. The body will suffer fatigue, exertion dyspnea, dizziness, headaches, insomnia. If one is to read the list of symptoms below, which can fall into the same range. My opinion would be to rid the diet of all processed foods before deciding to go on any medications, the body will get a chance to clean itself of the chemicals, and heal of its deficiency. It is only my opinion and belief that anemia is linked to the consumption of  nitrites/nitrates.

Blue Baby Syndrome may be caused by high nitrite drinking water, but also may be caused because of eating; for instance vegetables containing high levels of nitrite. The water gets contaminated by nitrite fertilizers used to enrich the soil. Nitrites are carried by the rain, irrigation, and run off waters. Also animal and human wastes can contribute and contaminate the drinking water. The water unfortunately cannot be boiled or heated to rid it of nitrites. The only way to purify it is through ion exchange, distillation, or reverse osmosis. Organic root vegetables contain less nitrites because fertilizers aren’t used during their process of growing.

My Bout With Sulfites

When you go to the allergist to receive allergy shots you will be asked to wait for at least one hour to make sure you do not get a rise of histamines due to the allergen vaccine. Years ago, for me this was the norm. If you leave early you may be at risk for any serious reactions. If something were to happen you could be treated immediately by the office staff.

My reaction to sulfites was extreme sleepiness, although I was ignorant of what was going on with me at that time. I was taking an anatomy/physiology class and the class was studying histamines and the symptoms of a massive release from the mast cells due to allergens. I explained to my professor my extreme sleepiness and how I could barely make it through the morning. This had been going on for some time. We investigated the what, why, how, etc. It was always in the morning after my Raisin Bran for breakfast. He explained to me that there were possible sulfites on the raisins and that I was having an allergic reaction. But if I went home to sleep like I wanted to; he said that the histamine levels were high and I could fall asleep and possibly not wake up. So in order to combat that (I wasn’t ready to die yet.) I stopped eating all raisins and dried fruit until I found out that organics don’t have sulfites or any preservatives. I was able to enjoy dried fruit again.

We have to be pro-active and READ LABLES, keep ourselves educated about the foods we consume and what the preservatives can do to our bodies.

Sulfites are considered as a preservative and antioxidants, as well as an additive. They are used to keep dried fruits like apricots from turning brown, and increasing the shelf life, preserve color and inhibit microbial growth of a variety of other foods. These additives have been tested and yet the scientists claim they have not yet been scientifically proven to cause severe or even deadly reactions in some people. Or so they say!

When sulfites are consumed your liver transforms these to sulfates. However, for people with sulfite intolerance or sensitivity, this transformation doesn’t take place properly, or will happen very slowly. When the sulfites arrives in the liver, it blocks the function of glutathione located there. Glutathione aids processes, such as the breakdown of alcohol by the liver. But now it means you will suffer more from the effects of the toxic side effects.

What is happening with these toxins within the body is due to the overload of histamines put out by the body’s immune system. They are on full alert to rid of the toxins that were ingested and considered as poisons. With this allergic reaction the immune systems becomes hypersensitive and the mast cells release histamines in inordinate amounts. Which then causes the visible symptoms of a localized reaction, including runny nose, watery eyes, constriction of the bronchi and tissue swellings. Histamines also contributes to anaphylaxis, a severe, immediate and often fatal response to exposure to a previously encountered antigen. The activity can be blocked by various chemical drugs, like antihistamines. It’s best to avoid these preservatives and additives or you may take a poison to counteract another poison.

The brain is the ultimate security system , it scans the entire body through its army of microbes, cells, and organs. But the number one big flaw, it tries to save the human organism from near death, it has limited energy. This is evident when the body is suffering from histamine intolerance. To combat the presence of histamine, the brain focuses all of its energy and resources on the task at hand, this leaves the other parts of the body ‘stranded’, due to the energy spent you might feel like you are unable to regain consciousness. Histamine intolerance can led to a sudden feeling of exhaustion. This problem roots in the brain’s expenditure of energy to deal with over abundant histamines within the blood. This excess can wreak havoc in the body, starting with the brain, the histamine has the ability to inhibit every neurotransmitter. Any unbalance in the chemical makeup of your brain is bound to cause unwanted effects such as brain fog, fatigue, and perhaps anxiety. There are many more reactions that may take place because that I have not written here for lack of space. But the point is the human body does not take well to these additives, please READ LABELS and avoid them Science is trying to determine what we will eat, and most people think if it’s in the grocery stores it must be safe to eat…IT IS NOT SAFE! Don’t take the chance with your own health or with your families health.

The Ajinomoto Company is the main manufacture of MSG and hydrolyzed vegetable protein. It is an additive and a flavor enhancer, which can be very addictive within the body. That’s where the cravings come from…the more you eat the more the body wants to have. The inability to stop eating even though the stomach has had enough, is because the flavors/additives have synthesized and tricked our brain into wanting more. Our food supply is being chemically produced and enhanced with these flavors, unfortunately it’s EVERYWHERE and the public is being targeted. The Big Food Companies are ‘hijacking’ our taste buds one by one.

Who is overseeing the safety of flavors in our food? A government or independent agency does not do this job, instead a flavor industry trade group…The Flavor and Extract Manufactures Association (FEMA) has assembled their own ‘independent’ panel of scientists who review and approve new flavors as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).These scientists are paid by the (FEMA) trade group (who ultimately get their funding from the flavor companies.

Public advocacy groups have tried to get certain flavorings banned because these flavors/additives can create issues linked to cancer, but little has been done.

The person who eats a typical American diet full of additives, preservatives, etc. will consume more water than the body actually needs, because the diet is far from water efficient. The high salt content is the reason why. The body will demand a large amount of water to hold the salt in solution so it won’t harm the tissues of the body. But the more insidious food additives such as monosodium glutamate must be kept away from the cells in this highly diluted form so they are not immediately toxic; unfortunately some of this toxic materials may still seep into and damage the body’s cells.

MSG/Glutamate also happens to be an excitatory transmitter. What that means is it increases the levels of electrical in the brain and auditory cortex where the loud noise caused by tinnitus is received. There are two kinds of neurotransmitters, excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitory neurotransmitters.

If the first neuron releases an excitatory transmitter (resulting in an increase of electrical activity) the receiving neuron will transmit this information to the next neuron. However, if the first neuron releases an inhibitory neurotransmitter (resulting in reduced electrical activity) the signal is suppressed and not passed on, some neurons have both inhibitory and excitatory synapses connected to them and this further fine tunes the signal.

Glutamate is the most common neurotransmitters in the brain. It’s role is primarily an excitatory substance which causes the brain to be stimulated, but we do not want our brains to be stimulated when we want to rest, relax or sleep. The MSG/Glutamate in the body triggers this firing of neurons. When there is too much glutamate in the synapse between neurons, it will activate the neurons into a continual firing mode until they exhaust their energy reserves and die. The body tries to compensate because it tries to send the GABA (gamma-amino-butyric-acid) to quiet down this activity. But an overload of glutamate can defeat this. All of this brain activity can also lead to panic attacks and anxiety disorder, stress, increased heart rate and heart palpitations as well as many neurodegenerative conditions such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s even Tinnitus. All of this activity causes Tinnitus because people with this condition have elevated levels of glutamate and the hyperexcitibility that goes along with it in their auditory cortex.

Glutamate is the primary villain in cochler-synoptictinnitus. This type develops when the hair cells in the cochlear are damaged. This is caused primarily by exposure to loud noises or ototoxic drugs which damage the hair cells. When the hair cells are damaged, they release large amounts of glutamate which becomes toxic to the neuroreceptors in the auditory pathway. These receptors die off from the excess glutamate and tinnitus is the result.

The pathway to neuron death: The electrical connections in the brain and the auditory pathway; the synapses are continually stimulated or inhibited by neurotransmitters. Two of the main stimulating (excitatory) are Glutamate and Aspartate; while the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter is Gamma-Amino-Butyric-Acid (GABA). If these transmitters become out of balance neurological problems develop. Tinnitus is a degenerative neurological condition that is affected by excitotoxins and sudden deafness can occur due the excess glutamate.

In the 1950’s there were early warning signs, some ophthalmologists tested MSG on infant mice to study eye disease. The MSG destroyed all of the nerve cells in the inner layers of the animals retina which are the visual receptors of the eye. Then ten years later, a neuroscientist John Olney MD repeated the study, not only to the eye but the brain as well. The hypothalamus was destroyed with one single dose of MSG/Glutamate!

FDA labeling restrictions state MSG must be listed on the product label only when it is in free form. If it is combined with other food additive components, it does not have to be listed separately. This loophole in the label requirements led to the development of hydrolyzed vegetable protein, vegetable protein, and natural flavorings.

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein is manufactured from “junk vegetables” which are no longer fit for retail sale. They are then boiled in sulfuric acid for several hours, then neutralized with a caustic soda. A brown sludge rises to the surface of the mixture. This is scraped off, dried, and powdered after which MSG is added, typically in the range of 40-60%. It is then added by the food industry from everything from canned tuna to baby foods. This all happens without any mention of MSG on the label.
